Sergey Tsurkan
Research Scientist
"Fusion is always something that I saw in movies or comic books growing up,” said Sergey. “The physics says that it’s possible and the opportunity to apply fundamental sciences to a real world challenge is an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up."
Sergey brought a deep background in fundamental sciences to the Avalanche team when he joined in 2023. He has a masters in Solid State Physics from Heidelberg University and a Ph.D. in Physics, with a focus on low dimensional magnetism, from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Following his studies in Germany, Sergey did a postdoc at the University of Washington in Seattle, before working for Modern Hydrogen on their carbon engineering team.
Sergey works as a research scientist at Avalanche, designing and developing new materials for applications in fusion reactor prototypes. His work involves modeling the properties of new materials, as well as performing experimental studies to characterize the materials.
Sergey was born in Kiev, Ukraine and he immigrated to Seattle with his family at a young age before studying in Germany and then returning back to the PNW. When he isn’t exploring the unexplored of the physic’s world, he enjoys Brazilian jiu jitsu.
