Moein Borghei

High Voltage Scientist

"I saw the opportunity to work with the team at Avalanche as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The project seems like something out of science fiction, but it could change the future of humankind and help to put us on a path towards truly sustainable energy."

Moein wins the award for having traveled the furthest from home to work at Avalanche.

Originally from Iran, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran before moving to Virginia to earn a Ph.D. in the same field from Virginia Tech.

His academic studies focused on high-voltage systems and included projects working on the aging of electrical components at high altitude in aircrafts and the optimization of microgrids within the broader power distribution grid.

Moein’s work at Avalanche is focused on addressing the challenges associated with using high-voltage technologies to produce the power necessary for creating fusion reactions, while preventing arc, surface flashover and discharges that endanger the reliability of the system.
